Foreign Troops In Malaya
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) KUALA LUMPUR, July 6. Malaya would be secure after independence on August 31 next with the present strength of Commonwealth troops in the country, Tunku Abdul Rahman said today. “Therefore we will not ask for any more Commonwealtn troops,’’ he said.
The Tunku said that the Commonwealth troops, including an Australian and a New Zealand battalion would be used against Communist terrorists in “certain areas.’’
He was commenting on a statement reported to have been made in the House of Commons by Mr Alan Lennox-Boyd, the Colonial Secretary. He is reported to have said that Malaya would have to make use of overseas troops to fight terrorists after independence.
The Tunku said that this did not mean that overseas troops would be in Malaya permanently. “Malaya’s army will in time be able to stand on its own feet,’’ he said.
