CHILDREN FUND
Great Needs In Korea
“ ‘Operation Korea’ must be the cry of the Save the Children Fund for the coming year,” said the Dominion chairman of the fund (Mrs L; H. Hazlett, Invercargill) when speaking at the annual meeting of the North Canterbury branch yesterday. Many sick Korean children had to be refused medical assistance because of the lack of funds with which to buy the necessary medical supplies, she said. After welcoming members and guests, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) said that Major K. R. Cronin had given a first-hand report of his experiences while administrator for the fund in Korea when he visited Christchurch in October last.
‘‘lf we can show the children of the world today what love and friendship can do for them, we will have gone a long way towards bringing about world peace,” said the Mayoress (Mrs Macfarlane). “If we can teach our own children to share their possessions and interests with less favoured playmates, then this feeling towards children overseas will grow.”
The Dominion president (Miss M. C. Havelaar) read a letter from the Fund’s welfare officer in Geneva, who said that those who cared for children’s needs cared for a sound community. Home Expenses Fund Mrs M. B. Warren spoke on the need for a home expenses fund for the smooth-running of the organisation. If Friends of the Save the Children Fund were to increase and guarantee an annual subscription of 5s a year, this would be most reassuring to those who were in executive positions. The Dominion secretary (Mrs A. F. Gilkinson, Wellington) and the president of the Hastings branch (Mrs Lovell Smith) also attended the meeting. Officers Elected
