Holiday Deaths In U.S.

More than 700 persons were killed in violent accidents throughout the United States during the long Independence Day holiday period. The toll for the 102-hour period from 6 p.m. on July 3 to midnight showed 419 persons lost their lives in motor accidents. Drowning also took a heavy toll, with 201 reported. Miscellaneous accidents caused 99 deaths, for a total of 719. Later reports were expected to increase the total. The road deaths compared with the record traffic toll for a July 4 holiday period of 491 set during the four-day holiday in 1955. The National Safety Council, in a preholiday statement, had estimated that this year’s total would reach 535.
