£lOO In Notes And Silver Taken

Thieves blew open the office safe of Miller's. Ltd., Ashburton, some time during the week-end and took about £lOO in notes and I silver. The money was part of] Friday's takings in the store. The intruders gained entry by forcing, with a crowbar or a tyre lever, the front door of the shop on East street, the main street of Ashburton. The office, which is in the front of the shop was then entered and the safe was blown] open with gelignite. To deaden; the noise the intruders wrapped] rugs and rolls of material round] the safe. As soon as the discovery of the entry was made by a police con- ■ stable about 12.30 a.m. yesterday] the Christchurch police were noti-| fied. Detectives from the Criminal] Investigation Branch, under De-tective-Sergeant T. Thomson, made investigations yesterday morning and returned to Christchurch later in the day. Detective - Sergeant Thomson • said yesterday that there was a possibility that the entry had been forced by persons who were passing through Ashburton and it I was likely that the crime occurred on Sunday evening. It appeared 1 that only money was removed I from the store.
