N.Z. TRADE POST IN SOUTH AFRICA
Appointment Being Considered
(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, July 7.
The Government is considering appointing a trade commissioner in South Africa, the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr E. H. Halstead) has informed the Associated Chambers of Commerce.
Since the retirement of its honorary agent, Mr H. J. Constable, in'l(/55, New Zealand has had no trade representative in the Union.
Mr Halstead said it was not intended to appoint another honorary agent and the Government was considering the question of permanent representation along the lines of the existing nine overseas trade posts.
The Minister said South Africa could not be considered on its own. The Government must compare it with the rewards that could be expected to follow the appointment of trade commissioners in areas like Hong Kong or the West Indies.
