THE ART OF BEAUTY Loveliness Can Be Increased By Artifice

[By

MARILYN FISHER

and

IVI RIIVES]

A woman anywhere can create the illusion of loveliness. You do not need to be beautiful, but the aura of loveliness can be created with the careful use of individually chosen cosmetics. Each face has its own charm and its good points. These are the qualities which we try to stress with the proper use of make-up and a flattering hairstyle.

Before a woman considers make-up she must recognise a basic beauty routine. The importance of individual complexion care, so essential for the illusion of a young healthy skin, should never be overlooked. Only then can she begin to cope with makeup problems.

Foundation is your favourite powder base; it can be a light liquid foundation, a -pancake type of foundation or the most popular liquid-oil and powder foundation which gives colour, cover and luminosity to the skin. But no matter what base you use see that it is applied evenly, covering the neck as well as the face, and that it is blended close to the hairline and around the jawbone. To counteract any sagging of the facial muscles always apply makeup with an upward stroke.

Although not a basic cosmetic for many women, rouge is a necessity to some. Since natural colouring is desirable, rouge should always be chosen to match the natural blood tone of the cheeks. The new liquid rouges are easily blended and give this sought-after effect with little practice. The final touch to the flawless complexion is given by a generous application of powder (chosen to blend with your foundation); then the excess is brushed away. The fair complexion can look so wonderfully light with the dusting of a plain talcum and Qpalescent powder over a pale foundation. Lipstick Application Lipstick, the most universally used make-up, is most flawlessly applied by using a fine sable

brush to outline the mouth for the desired shape, then filled in. For a younger, softer, definitely pretty look try using a lighter shade of lipstick inside the slightly darker tone outline. Last, but ever so important with latest fashion, is eye make-up. Or do you still have doubts about wearing it? If so—just one look at this season’s hats will provide you with a definite need for more colour, more accent at eye level. The amount is relative—relative to dress and individual colouring. As an evening gown is not suitable business attire, likewise the new beautifully gold and silver tones, so flattering by candlelight, are completely out of place in the sunshine.

The question of colour has three answers. There is the traditional answer: to match the colour of the iris; the conservative one, to repeat the shade of your costume or hat, and the fashion answer which emphasises the individuality of the wearer. This might be the blending of a contrasting colour or the combination of two or more shades.

A phase of make-up so often neglected is the eye liner—a narrow clear line drawn across the upper eyelid and slightly extended beyond the outside corner and up. This is usually done with a

soft dark brown or black pencil. Mascara is another definite aid to eye beauty often overlooked as an eyeliner. Applied with a fine sable brush, a finer and more lasting line is produced. A touch of mascara on the lashes will further emphasise the eye picture. To complete it we next consider the shape of the brow. Plucking is essential in most cases and should be done below th'e brow, never above. The .pencil colour used to shape the brow should match it, or be a shade darker and is applied in short brush-like strokes. For a personal touch—brush a little of the shadow used on your lashes and brows. But remember—the focus is on your eyes—so be most careful with your application.

Now we take a critical look at the lovelier you—ls your foundation and powder suitable for your complexion? Does it look natural —fresh and alive. Are your lips well-shaped and dewy like petals? And your eyes, the mirrors of your personality, do they possess that desirable magnetism, reflecting a new, lovelier, poised you? For the final test, stand at arm’s length in front of your mirror—can you tell where nature ends and art begins? If not —be satisfied and assured that no-one else will either.

Now you can walk into any room, a dinner party or an intimate gathering with the confidence of a loveliness that reaches out to surround its beholder.

Next week—the crown of glory —your hair.
