Cricket WEST INDIES’ COMEBACK

295 For Three In Reply To England

(N.Z. Press Association— Copyright). (Rec. 8 p.m.)

. „ NOTTINGHAM, July 6. O„t K g^tang lnnings of 145 n °t out by Frank Worrell helped the West Indies make a splendid comeback against England on the third day of the third cricket test today.

Facing England’s huge total of °l9 for six declared, the West Indies. 59 without loss overnight, had scored 295 for three by the close. They then needed 175 runs to avoid a follow-on. England won the second test had been drawn. The West Indies waged a remorseless fight on a pitch made for batting. Thanks to Worrell, the England speed attack of Statham. Trueman and Bailey was mastered and the dangerous spin of Laker was kept at arm’s length. Laker raised England’s hopes when he broke the opening stand by bowling the left-hander, Garfield Sobers, at 87 this morning. He also held a swift return catch to dispose of Clyde Walcott at 120. Able Partner But the imperturbable Worrell found an able partner in the youthful Rohan Kanhai, who discarded his natural aggression for a “stone-walling” policy. He batted three hours for 42 while 109 were added for the third wicket. He was caught behind the wicket off Bailey; Worrell reached a chanceless century in five hours 55 minutes. He hit 10 fours. At the close he had batted eight hours and hit 17 fours in his 145 not out Worrell never faltered as he approached his eighth test century. It was his fifth against England and his second at Trent Bridge, where he hit 261 when the West Indies won by 10 wickets in 1950.

After losing Kanhai, Worrell found himself with his old partner, Everton Weekes. For the first time since the innings started the runs came at one a minute. Weekes was under the handicap of a damaged finger, but he and Worrell found more opportunities as the bowlers tired. Graveney’s Triumph

In reaching 619, England made its highest total in post-war tests, beating the 608 at Johannesburg in 1948-49. It was a personal triumph for Tom Graveney. In what was regarded as his last chance to prove himself in test cricket, his 258 was the highest of his career.

He batted almost without blemish for 7hr 55min, and going in after the fall of Don Smith at 14, he was fourth out at 510, having taken part in two doublecentury stands. The West Indies used eight bowlers and all must be commended for sticking to their task under a hot sun on a pitch which gave no assistance. As in the previous tests at Lord’s, Ramadhin held no terror for the batsmen, his 38 overs costing 95 funs. The tourists had two hours batting before the close.
