Shoal Selected In Stakes At Washdyke

The first contest for the President’s Stakes, a race at set weights for mares and fillies, will be an attraction at Washdyke today, when the South Canterbury Jockey Club will hold the second day of its winter meeting. Four-year-olds and more have 8-10 and three-year-olds, 8-5, with an allowance of 101 b for hacks.

The withdrawal yesterday of Tess, the pre-post favourite, and of this season’s V.R.C. Oaks winner, Innesfell, has deprived the event of some of its interest, although the field now bears a much more open appearance. Shoal’s best performance in five starts since she was runnerup to Tess in the Dominion Handicap at Riccarthn at Easter was a fast-finishing fourth in the Maronan Handicap, of one mile, at Ashburton a fortnight ago. Although today’s distance, one mile and 35 yards, is short ot Shoal’s best, in a field of the handy size she will encounter here she should not be far from the lead and may outclass the others for finishing speed. Teina Helped A winter track may be against Merrimayes but should help Teina, : which was placed on heavy ground at her last start against the sprinters on the third day of the Dunedin winter meeting. Teina is expected to be Shoal’s strongest opponent. Scuppered and Smuggles are both capable gallopers in heavy ground, but both may be hampered by their inability to reach top speed quickly, although it will surprise if they are not running on strongly at the finish. Barbara’s Treasure and Recluse, which both claim the hack allowance, complete the field, and the latter, which was narrowly beaten over a mile at Oamaru last month, makes the most appeal. Unless Tut Tut recaptures his ability to jump safely, the Timaru Steeplechase finish is expected to be dominated. by Lumphanan and Grey Valley, winner and runnerup last Saturday. Lumphanan

Lumphanan won with 9-9 and now has 10-4, with Grey Valley coming into this field on 61b better terms. Lumphanan has good pace for a jumper, but the dogged Grey Valley should finish strongly at the end of the two miles and a half on a soft track.

The double will be on the Doncaster Handicap and the Taiko Hack Handicap, for which Column and Beau Revere form an attractive combination. There have been no scratchings from the second leg, but Demand, Blackfellow, Martin’s Bay, Peril and Leprechaun have dropped out of the Doncaster Handicap. Other additional scratchings yesterday were: Sun House (Kerrytown Hack Hurdles), Olympic Flame (Caroline Handicap) and Royal Tattoo, Winning Treasure and Stage Boy from the Strathallan Hack Handicap, in which Barbara’s,Treasure re-enters the field. There were some heavy showers in Timaru on Thursday night and yesterday it was expected the track would be easy but in good winter order. Selections:— 11 a.m.—Otaio Handicap: Stage Boy, Scarlet Pimpernel, Mercenary Beau. 11.40 a.m.—Kerrytown Hurdles: Tisred, Baffling Eyes, De Bracey. 12.25 p.m.—Caroline Handicap: Lucky Gay, The Mint, Buckles. 1.5 p.m.—Doncaster Handicap: Column, Fair Summer, Assembly. 1.45 p.m.—Timaru Steeplechase: Grey Valley, Lumphanan, Tut Tut. 2.25 p.m.—President’s Stakes: Shoal, Teina, Merrymayes. 3.5 p.m.—Taiko Hack Handicap: Beau Revere, Lord Fane, Fairy King. 3.45 p.m.—Strathallan Hack Handicap: Expedition, Bobwood, Sir Ed-
