SNOW ON PORTER’S PASS

Chains Essential For Cars

Porter’s Pass, on the Otira route to the West Coast road, was covered in 6in of snow late yesterday afternoon, and motorists using the road were advised by the Automobile Association (Canterbury) that chains were essential. The snow lay on the road as far as Craigieburn. Graders were working on the road late yesterday afternoon but snow continued to fall during clearing operations. There ,was no snow lying on the summit of Arthur’s Pass late yesterday afternoon, although it had been snowing lightly in the area all day. There was a very light coating of snow in the Arthur’s Pass township. Although temperatures were very cold throughout Canterbury yesterday, and there were light drifts of snow falling at times, no snow was reported lying in country districts on the plains. In most areas, light, drizzling rain fell during the day. Foothills in the Springfield, Methven, and Oxford districts were well covered in snow, and snow was falling heavily in some high country areas. Heavy falls were reported from Mount Hutt station, and snow was lying in depth on the Mount Hutt road. No snow was reported from the Culverden and Kaikoura districts.

There was a light coating of snow on the tops of* the Banks Peninsula hills, but the road at Hilltop was quite clear. Some districts near the foothills reported heavy rain last evening.
