FORECASTING OF WEATHER
Value Of I.G.Y. Studies (New Zealand Press Association/ WELLINGTON, July 4.
There would probably be no immediate spectacular improvemetfit in weather forecasting as a result of International Geophysical Year studies, said Mr I. S. Kerr, head of the forecasting section of the Meteorological Service. He was addressing the physics section of the Royal Society of New Zealand at Wellington. “We certainly hope to learn something,” he said, “but it is only a hope.” In spite of the enormous effort going into I.G.Y. research, there were still big gaps not covered in regard to forecasting, he said. “I am not decrying the effort—it is tremendous compared with past work—but do not expect too much from it in forecasting,” he said.
