Miss B. O’Dowd will become warden of Helen Connon Hall, the Canterbury University College women’s hostel, next year. She holds a master -of* arts degree, was a secondary school teacher for four years, spent a year on the National Archives staff, and for the last 16 months has been an assistant history lecturer and student adviser at Auckland University College. .

The garden circle of the National Party held an evening session recently when the guest speaker (Professor L. W. McCaskill) showed some slides dealing with the trees of the world in the places he has recently visited.

Mrs F. Milne presided at the July meeting of the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs C. H G. Plumridge, Dominion president, was guest of honour. The guest speaker was Mrs N. Neale, who spoke on Burma.

The service at a recent meeting of the St. Thomas’s Mothers’ Union was conducted by the Rev. L. A. Daines. The guest speaker was Mrs A. C. Purchas, who gave a talk on the work of the Mothers’ Union overseas, mentioning particularly the work done in Africa and in South India and Melanesia. Mrs W. Murray presided.
