FALSE PRETENCE CHARGES
Australian Posed As Doctor

Posing as an Australian doctor, Noel Patrick Jackson, aged 20, hoodwinked about 20 firms in Auckland and Dunedin into supplying him with goods by saying that he was about to set up a practice, it was alleged in the Magistrate’s Court today. Jackson pleaded guilty to 20 charges of obtaining money and goods by false pretences, and one of attempting to commit suicide.
Mr J. G. Warrington, S.M., remanded Jackson till July 15 for sentence.
Jackson arrived in Auckland from Australia on June 4'. said Detective-Sergeant C. G. Evans. From June 5 to June 18 he obtained £3OO 14s 5d in goods and £122 2s in money. About £290 in goods had been recovered. When arrested he had £56 18s 5d in his possession. Representing himself as a doctor, Jackson opened an account with an .Auckland bank. With valueless cheques, he obtained medical books and other goods from several Auckland firms He obtained accommodation at a private hotel, paying for it with valueless cheques. In Dunedin Jackson opened a bank account rnd obtained medical books from Dunedin concerns. Jackson, interviewed on June 18, was unable to produce any credentials. He had a criminal record in Australia, where he was on a bond of good behaviour.

Mr Algie’s Message To Scientists

"A great adventure—the biggest ever undertaken in any branch of science” is the description given to International Geophysical Year by the Minister of Scientific and Industrial Research (Mr R. M. Algie) in a message to all New Zealanders taking part in the project. Mr Algie’s message was dispatched by personal letter or cable to scientists stationed in the tropics, in New Zealand, and in the Antarctic.
