THIRD TEST BEGINS
(Rec. 1.30 a.m.) LONDON, July 4. England won the toss and batted first in the third test against the West Indies at Trent Bridge today. The West Indies must win this match to keep the series alive after England’s victory in the first two tests.
By dropping G. A. R. Lock (Surrey) from the 12 England players, the selectors have included two brothers in a test team for the first time this century. The brothers are P. E. and D. W. Richardson. The latter will be playing in his first test match. The England team is: P. B. H. May, T. E; Bailey, M. C. Cowdrey, T. G. Evans, T. W. Graveney, J. C. Laker, D. W. Richardson, P. E. Richardson, D. V. Smith, B. Statham and F. R. Trueman. The West Indian team is: J. Goddard, C. L. Walcott, E. D. Weekes, F. M. Worrell. G. Sobers, C. A. Smith, R. Kanhai, S. Ramadhin, D. Atkinson, R. Gilchrist,' A. Valentine.
The outfield was heavy and greasy from a shower yesterday and light rain during the night, but the covered pitch was not affected. The weather is dull and threatening. After half an hour, Kanhai snapped up a chance by Smith off Worrell and England was 31 for one. P. E. Richardson was on 21 and Graveney was the new batsman.
This was the only success of the morning for the West Indies and at lunch England had scored 125 for one. Richardson was 73 not out and Graveney 47 not out
