Constables Receive Service Medals
Four constables were presented yesterday with silver long service medals by the Controller-General of Police (Mr S. T. Barnett). Each medal is inscribed with the bearer’s name and police number. As he pinned the medals to each man’s tunic, Mr Barnett said: “This is the honour the State confers on you, not merely for long service, but for good service.” The men honoured were Constables N. F. Smith (Lyttelton), E. C. B. Rundle (Christchurch Central), L. Hughes (Christchurch Central), and C. White (Addington).
Each constable qualified for the medal because of more than 14 years’ service with good conduct. Two constables have sporting backgrounds, Constable Rundle, now a watch-house keeper, is a former amateur boxer, surfer, and athlete. Constable Hughes is a former West Coast Rugby representative.
