Trotting Scottish Brigade Sold To Australian Studmaster

Mr G. Youngson, of Gore, has sold the Light Brigade stallion, Scottish Brigade, to an Australian studmaster and the horse will leave for Sydney shortly. Scottish Brigade had a most successful race career while held on lease by the Gore studmaster and trainer, C. C. Scott.

In five seasons, Scottish Brigade had 60 starts for nine wins and 25 placings worth £8645. He graduated to a 4min 24sec mark for two miles and would probably have reached New Zealand Cup company had his career not been restricted by recurring soreness. Scottish Brigade joined C. C Devine’s Templeton team in January, 1956, and for him he won four times and was placed in a number of races for over £4OOO in stakes.

Scottish Brigade is a six-year-old stallion by Light Brigade from the New Zealand Derby winner, Scottish Lady, the dam also of the speedy three-year-old. Gentry, and a useful winner in Scottish Bank. Scottish Lady was by U. Scott from Rustic Maid, founder of an outstanding winning family. Scottish Brigade took a high ranking in his two-year-old season when he gained one win and four placings from his five starts. He was third to Buccaneer and Lynberne in the Timaru Nursery Stakes at his first appearance and he followed this placing with a grand win over Lynberne in the New Zealand Welcome Stakes. He finished the season with a second to Buccaneer in the New Zealand Sapling Stakes at Ashburton. Scottish Brigade gave further evidence of his ability when he beat Bounden Duty in the Riccarton Stakes after taking 2min 41 2-ssec for mile and a quarter He was algo runner-up to Rupee in the New Zealand Metropolitan Challenge Stakes on the second day of the cup meeting. Beaten In Derby Following his sound efforts, Scottish Brigade vlras favourite for the New Zealand Derby Stakes, but he could do no better than fourth to Caduceus, Santa Amada and Bounden Duty after pacing the mile and a half in 3min Msec. Scottish Brigade received a good run throughout the race, but became badly pocketed at the straight entrance and he did not work clear until too late. However, it is doubtful whether he would have caught the winner. Scottish Brigade gained his second win for the season when he beat Local Light in the Great Northern Derby Stakes in the race record time of 3min 16sec for the mile and a half.

Scottish Brigade was off the scene for some months and resumed racing with a second to Our Kentucky in the Gore Cup in* December, 1954. Later in the month he beat Blazeworthy in the Winton Handicap. He recorded one of his best efforts at the Canterbury Park summer meeting when he came from the rear of the field at the straight entrance to finish brilliantly wide out and beat King’s Blue in the Selwyn Handicap. Scottish Brigade was most disappointing until he joined Devine’s team last season. At his second start for his new trainer he beat Golden Marino in the Rothschild Handicap at the Addington Easter meeting. A week

later he was runner-up to the brilliant Thunder in the Williams Handicap after taking 4min 16 3-ssec for the two miles. He was runner-up to Royal Minstrel in the Autumn Stakes at the samel meeting. During the current season Scot- I tish Brigade gained three wins.' He won the Henry Mace Handicap at New Brighton in the 1 spring; beat Stadium Chief in the i Smithson Handicap at Addington in November; and beat Count Grattan in the Au Revoir Handicap at the Canterbury Park summer meeting.
