PORT NOT YET DECIDED
Minister’s Letter To Power Board “The Press” Special Service OAMARU, June 26. The importation of equipment for the proposed Benmore hydroelectric scheme was still a matter on which a decision had to be made, stated the Minister in charge of the State Hydro-elec-tric Department (Mr W. S. Goosman) in a letter to the Waitaki Electric Power Board. With respect to the , Oamaru Harbour Board’s facilities for handling heavy cargo, the position had not changed since the dispatch of his last letter in July. 1956, the Minister said. “I again assure you that the Ministry of Works and State Hydro-electric Department will give due attention to the facilities available at the Port of Oamaru when deciding the port of delivery for cargo for the scheme. “However, a very important point which cannot be overlooked is that the port of delivery will be very much in the hands of the shipping companies and, as you may well know, in the main is dependent on other cargo offering for shipment to Oamaru.”
