Colour-Bar Complaint

Sir,—lt was enlightening to read the article on equality of opportunity for coloured students in your paper. The grave injustices inflicted on coloured students by the Department of External Affairs have been ignored too long. This perhaps is due to the ignorance of the public on these matters. The smug reply to pleas from coloured students, “In this department we don’t give reasons,’’ does not seem apt in a democratic country. Rigid immigration laws which forbid citizenship to the few coloured students desiring to take up a profession in New Zealand, reflect the strong colour prejudice of our Government. It would seem that their conscience is eased by the wholesale immigration policy extended to people from north-western Europe. There is an urgent need to press for more humane treatment from our government departments.—Yours, etc., S.M.C. June 26, 1957.
