USE OF REBATE PETROL
“Whole Matter Under Consideration”
(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, June 26.
The Minister of Transport (Mr W. S. Goosman) was urged in the House of Representatives this afternoon to bring down regulations for rebate petrol to be coloured. Mr W. T. Anderton (Opposition, Auckland Central) said that this was necessary if a check was to be kept on the misuse of this petrol. Mr Anderton, who was speaking in the discussion on written Ministerial replies to questions, had asked the Minister what steps were being taken to ascertain the extent to which farmers were using the rebate of Is 3d a gallon on petrol to reduce their private running costs. The Minister said in his reply that the whole matter was under investigation. “I am a little bit disappointed with the reply,” said Mr Anderton.
The Minister, he added, knew that misuse of this petrol had been going on for some considerable time. The people were not going to sit quietly by while they were cheated by one section of the community.
