APARTHEID PROTEST
Police Go On Guard (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11.30 p.m.) JOHANNESBURG, June 26.
Police are standing by in several centres in South Africa today for nation-wide “demonstrations of freedom” and meetings called by the African National Congress. European employers fear that the Congress appeal may result in many Africans not appearing for work.
The Acting Deputy Commissioner of Police for Witwatersrand, Lieutenant-Colonel J. J. Kruger, announced last night that special two-way police protection had been arranged in Johannesburg for Africans travelling to work from African townships and returning home after work. Railway stations and bus stops will be guarded, and strong detachments of police will be present in townships and at key points. The demonstrators are protesting against apartheid legislation.
