RETURN OF CHUKOR

Report From Mount

Torlesse

It appeared that the chukor were coming back again from Marlborough, and were becoming established near 13-Mile Bush and Mount Torlesse, said an observer who wrote to the North Canterbury Acclimatisation Society, in a letter received at last evening’s meeting of the council. He had been talking to an opossum trapper, said the writer, and had been told that not only-were there several big coveys of chukor oh the hillsides, but there were also “dozens and dozens” of native pigeons in the bush. It was most heartening to learn of the return of the' chukor, he said, for two years ago there had been only 10 to 20 in one covey. “If the indiscriminate shooter can be kept out of the area by the landholders, there may be a chance of the pigeons being allowed to exist in peace. “I know the members of our local acclimatisation society will do their utmost to safeguard all the birds,” he said.
