UNWANTED WAR MEDALS

PRETORIA, May 20. More than half of the South Africans who served in the Union Defence Forces in the Second World War have not claimed their campaign stars and medals, said a senior officer at Defence Headquarters, Pretoria. Of the 410,056 people who served with the South African forces, 231,560 have ignored repeated appeals to collect their awards from the War Records office in Pretoria, or to have them posted to their homes. Total applications for the stars and medals number 178.496. The awards issued total 603,211. —Reuter.
