CONTRACTORS AT ISLINGTON
Crown Land Sought For Expansion
So that most of its activities can be grouped and housed together at Islington, where its main business is done now, British Pavements (Canterbury), Ltd., has applied to the Commissioner of Crown Lands to purchase 10 acres of a reserve which adjoins its present site of 17 acres.
If the land can be bought, the company will build an office block for the office staff, which at present works in the city. It will also be able to expand, and new stores and workshops are likely to be built.
As the Islington yard and works are the hub of its road-contract-ing business, the company considers that it should be completely domiciled there, especially as it has expansion plans. One of the formalities involved in purchase of a Crown reserve is the calling for objections to the sale, and this first step has been taken. Maori Names Among the Christian names of New Zealanders at present on the Maori electoral roll are Taxi, Tractor, Epidemic, Doctor, Corkscrew, Sanatorium, Fiji, Soldier, Malta, Ambulance and Patio. To help sort the 40,000 cards of Maori electors the normal skeleton staff of the chief electoral | officer (Mr J. L. Irwin), who is also registrar of electors for the four Maori electorates, has been augmented by part-time workers. One staff member hopes to publish a book telling the history of every known Maori name. Much information of historical significance has been gleaned from the Maori enrolment cards, and his studies will be considerably helped by his work.
