DEMONSTRATION BY U.S. NAVY
Pacific To Atlantic Air Reinforcement (N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) NEW YORK, June 6. The United States Navy today staged an unprecedented transcontinental flight to prove that it can quickly reinforce Atlantic Fleet units with carrier-based aircraft, from the Pacific. In the operation, jet fighters and heavy attack bombers took off from the carrier Bonhomme Richard near San Diego, California, on a 2200-mile non-stop flight to the decks of the 60,000ton carrier Saratoga in Atlantic waters off Florida. The carrier-to-carner flight was part of an intensive 24-hour show of atomic-age naval power staged for President Eisenhower, the Secretary of State (Mr John Fostei Dulles), the Defence Secretary (Mr Charles Wilson), and other high Government officials aboard the Saratoga. Participating in the historic flight were two FBJI Crusader jet fighters and two A3D Sky Warriors, described as the most powerful naval attack bombers ever built for carrier operations.
