THIEVES ACTIVE AT WEEK-END
Safe Blown Open And
£l9B Stolen
About £l9B in cash and cheques was stolen when the safe in the footwear shop of R. Hannah and Co.. Ltd., at 117 Cashel street, was blown open with explosives during the week-end. A carpet runner from the shop was used to deaden the sound of the explosion. Entry to the premises was gained by forcing open a back door after two iron bars had been wrenched out.
Other Premises Entered The footwear shop of Russell and Penrose, at 108 Cashel street, was also entered during the weekend and £l3 was stolen from an unlocked safe. The thief or thieves forced an iron grille from a window to gain entry. The sports goods shop of Cromb and Merritt, Ltd., at 110 Cashel street, w as broken into by forcing a window from its frame but nothing was stolen. The unlocked safe was empty.
The sum of £l4 was stolen from the premises of W. Wilkins and Sons, Ltd., general plasterers, at 92 Fitzgerald avenue. These premises were also entered during the week-end.
