AWARDS FOR BEST PERFORMANCES

L. S. M. Miller And H. B. Cave

The awards for the most meritorious performances by New Zealand cricketers last season have been won by L. S. M. Miller, of Wellington (batting), and H. B. Cave (bowling). Miller last won the Redpath Cup for batting in the 1952-53 season, and Cave (Central Districts) was awarded the Winsor Cup for bowling in the 1955-56 season.

Miller headed the Plunket Shield batting averages last season with 73.2.

He scored 366 runs in five completed innings, and with several useful innings against the Australians totalled 559 runs for the season at an average of 55.9. This is the highest average to win the cup since Miller’s earlier award. Cave bowled with particular success ’ against the visiting Australian team and in the shield series. He took 23 wickets at an average of 14.4 in the Plunket Shield matches, and in the tests had match analyses of seven for 131, eight for 73, and two for 79. He finshed the season with 41 wickets at an average of 16.6, the second highest total for a Winsor Cup winner in a home season. CRAIG TO CAPTAIN AUSTRALIA South African Tour (N.Z. His vice-captain is the Victorian batsman, Neil Harvey. Craig, at 21, is the youngest player ever to lead Australia and the first New South Wales representative appointed touring captain since H. L. Collins in 1926. The appointments were announced today by the secretary of the Australian Board of Cricket Control, Mr John Ledward. Craig, who is working in England, is expected to seek permission to join the team in South Africa instead of returning first to Australia. PETER MAY TO LEAD ENGLAND (Rec. 7 p.m.) LONDON/May 5. Peter May, the 27-year-old Surrey captain, was today appointed to lead England for the entire five-match test series against the touring West Indies team. England’s team for the first test, beginning at Birmingham on May 30, will be chosen on May 26.
