RACING CHATEAU HAS SECOND SUCCESS AT BLENHEIM

(From Our Own Reporter)

BLENHEIM, May 6. 1 Chateau, revelling in the conditions, again outclassed { the stayers in the Richmond ? Brook Handicap, main event 1 and first leg of the double on ' the concluding day of the f Marlborough Racing Club’s j annual meeting today. A. C. Messervy adopted the • same tactics as he had in the Marlborough Cup on the first day 5 of the meeting, allowing the Pa- J nair mare to stride along under j a hold until the three furlongs where she was allowed more rein » and came away to gain her win- 1 ning margin before the straight, j Beau Ray ran on well without looking likely to trouble the win- . ner, and Benefactor gave a performance more in keeping with < his Marlborough Cup run. Appreciate, a short-priced fav- ] ourite for the second leg of the j double, the Seymour Handicap, gave L. H. Pratt his fourth train- ] ing success of the meeting and J the leading jockey, W. D. Skelton, j his seventh winning ride in double races in just more than a fortnight when he again convinc-

ingly beat the sprinters. Skelton’s successful mounts during that period include Rhythmonic (twice), Tess (twice) and Appreciate each day at the Marlborough Club’s meeting. The double dividend of £5 19s 6d for £1 was shared by the holders of 14,617 5s tickets. The weather, which had improved. after overnight rain, was fine throughout the day. The track, which was heavy early, improved as the meeting progressed. A good attendance invested £25.868 on course, including £2475 10s on the double, compared with £23,864. s The on course investments for < the three days amounted to ’ £66.602 10s, compared with * £70,201 last year. Chateau’s Win Passchenedaele tailed off early j in the Richmond Brook Handicap, | in which Greenwood, Saunter and , Chateau began best. At the end j of three furlongs Greenwood had t drawn out by two lengths from j Saunter, which was six lengths ; clear of Chateau, Beau Ray, | King’s Crest, Scuppered and , lone, which were racing at length intervals, ahead of Relinquish ■ and Goldwyn, with Benefactor and Kiaree Beau next, and i Passchenedaele toiling at the rear. ! Racing to the half mile, Saunter moved through to the lead i by a length from Greenwood, with Chateau a similar distance : back ahead of a bunch compris- i ing Beau Ray, King’s Crest, Scuppered and lone. As in the Marlborough Cup on the first day, Chateau raced past < Greenwood and Saunter into a i handy lead before the straight. : where Benefactor was improving ! on the outside of Beau Ray, with , Goldwyn next. Chateau did not 1 look likely to surrender her lead, and won comfortably by two lengths and a half from Beau 1 Ray, which ran on better than ’ Benefactor from the furlong. Goldwyn was a head back < fourth, four lengths clear of Scuppered, which made little impres- ’ sion in the straight. Kiaree Beau was next, and was followed in at < length intervals by Relinquish, Saunter, lone, King’s Crest and Greenwood, with Passchenedaele ! beaten off. Fulgent was found to be lame after doing his preliminary, and he was a late scratching for the race.

Three Wins Appreciate took the second leg of the double for the third time in succession when he won the Seymour Handicap by a length from the consistent Vita Glow. Appreciate had a perfect trail behind Vita Glow to the straight, joined the Pride of Kildare filly at the furlong, and mastered her with ease soon after. Kiatoa, which had been in third place throughout, made a short-lived challenge about a furlong from the finish, and, although he weakened slightly near the end, held third place comfortably two lengths back by eight lengths from Beau Ray. Beau Ray lost several lengths at the start, and was still well back last at the half mile. I Teko and Jesse James were 1 next to finish, clear of Super f Corn, which weakened badly after being handy to the half mile. Brown Baron, which filled second place in the hurdle events on the first two days of the meeting, was rewarded for that, consistency when he won the Wairau Hack Hurdles on the final day at Blenheim today. Always about fourth in the running, Brown Baron drew out with the pacemaker, Private Angelo, which had taken over after trailing to the half mile, approaching the straight. Although Brown Baron landed over the last fence a length behind Private Angelo, he wore down Private Angelo, to win by half a head. Avalanche, which had drifted after a bad jump at the six furlongs, was running on in third place, five lengths and a half back, two lengths clear of Cristatus, which was closer at the finish than at any other stage of the race. Sly Cat, the pacemaker to the half mile, was beaten off. fifth, clear of Jolly Miller and Royal Display. Second Win Olympic Torch, a decisive winner on the first day of the meeting, again gave her maiden rivals a galloping lesson in the Trial Stakes. Not prominent in the early rush for positions, Olympic Torch made a fast move on the outer going to the half-mile, and kept up a strong run which carried her <n\o a three lengths lead over Slip o’ Heather at the straight. Marveen and Moordale were next with Grand Choice which had drifted to the rear soon after the start, making up ground on the outer. Olympic Torch had no difficulty in maintaining her advantage in the run home and was being eased two lengths and a half clear of Slip o’ Heather at the post. Grand Choice, Moordale and Maryeen staged a good finish for third place, with the former gaining the decision In a photo-finish. Zami Lyn was beaten off sixth, clear of Panoramic. Tarwe In- Form Golden Warrior, although in receipt of an apprentice allowance of 71b, found too weight of 9-6 just beyond him in the Seddon Hack Handicap, and ne was beaten a nose by Tarwe. Tarwe and Golden Warrior were last and second last respectively at the end of half a furlong, where Shame was setting the pace by two lengths from Zareska, Instanter and Cerise, which were on terms ahead of Clansman.

Golden Warrior improved quickly to join Shame in the lead before the straight and these two were ahead of Cerise and Clansman (under pressure), and Tarwe, which was improving on the outer. Golden Warrior reached the front soon after straightening up and appeared to be in for his third win at the meeting when Tarwe lodged his strong challenge. Shame held third place two lengths back, a similar margin ahead of Zareska, which was followed in after a long gap by Instanter and Clansman. Nehru Wins Again Nehru completed a double for the meeting when he outstayed the distance hacks in the Champion Hack Handicap. He beat Royal Inca by a length. Nehru’s stablemate, Meteorologist, was three-quarters of a length back third, a length in front of Gay Tommy. The field raced <n line for almost a furlong before Balloch Prince showed out in the lead. At the mile the Balloch gelding was six lengths clear of Meteorologist and Nehru, with Gay Tommy and Royal Inca closely attending these two, ahead of Lady Valenta and Ultimax. Balloch Prince maintained nis lead into the back, but racing to the half-mile Meteorologist moved up to share the lead, a length clear of Nehru, with Gay Tommy a length and a half back ahead of Royal Inca. Balloch Prince dropped out before the straight, where Meteorologist had a slight lead on Nehru and Gay Tommy, with Royal Inca handy. At the furlong Nehru, Meteorologist and Gay Tommy were in line, with Royal Inca putting in a powerful run wider out on the track. Nehru gained his winning margin soon after and held Royal Inca comfortably at the post. Vivien Leigh Wins Vivien Leigh, a creditable third in the Juvenile Handicap on the first day, was never further back than sixth in the Nursery Handicap, and after following Lucky Gay and Triple Gold into line, finished too solidly for the former to win by a length. Lucky Gay, which shared the pace with Triple Gold to the straight, was two lengths and a half clear of Robes, which narrowly beat Triple Gold> for fourth. Awatere finished on from the middle for fifth, with Enniskerry right uo sixth, ahead of Prince Delaware, Fern and Golden Ribbon. Top-weignt Scottish King, the top-weight in the Dash Hack Handicap, finished too strongly for Beau Revere, which tried to lead throughout. The White Heather colt prevailed in a photo-finish by a nose. Scottish King was fifth in the early running, but moved up on the outside of Meteorologist behind Beau Revere and Night Patrol approaching the straight. Brought out into the better going in the middle of the track, he responded to the vigorous riding of V. R. Coley and kept up his strong finishing run to master the Orari-trained gelding, near the post. Meteorologist battled on well to hold third place two lengths back, six lengths ahead of Skyrain. Winnings just beat the weakening Night Patrol for fifth, and Saorita, which had trailed to the three furlongs, was beaten off at the head of the others.

Rehandicaps Appreciate has been rehandicapped 51b to 9-1 in the Tinwald Handicap at Ashburton on Saturday.
