DUNEDIN WOOL SALE

Prices Fully Firm (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, May 6. Prices for fine wools were fully firm to sellers’ favour as compared with the recent Christchurch sale, says the official report of the fourth and final Dunedin wool sale held today. “All crossbreds showed a slight rise on the Invercargill sale,” the report added. “Lambs* wool and crutchings were erratic, except for well-sorted lines, which were in keen demand. All skirtings advanced in sellers’ favour. The offering included some scoured lots which met spirited competition.” The offering of 17,619 bales was fully representative and contained some excellent quality clips for a final sale. The crossbred section contained some attractive lines, although there was a large proportion of tender wool. “There was a large percentage of crutchings, second-shear, and lambs’ wool, some of the latter being in first-class condition. “In the fine wools there were some outstanding clips from the high-country growers in spite of the very dry conditions during the last year. The total offering for the season just exceeds that of the previous year. “There was a full bench of buyers, and all sections were active. Bidding was widespread, and much keener than at earlier sales. The sale opened on a firm note, which lasted to the final lot.”

Top Price 92d Farmers were delighted with prices paid at the sale. Values were fully firm on rates at th? recent Invercargill sale, and crossbreds showed a slight rise. Prices generally were the best foi a number of years. Top price was 92d for four bales of halfbred hogget wool sold on behalf of the estate of R. A. Phillips, Tarras. The lot was bought by local mills. Extra fine crossbred maae to 79Jd, fine crossbred to 71Jd, and medium to 70Jd. Extra fine halfbred went to 92d, and fine halfbred to 85£d. Merino brought from 65d to 68d for average sorts, good to super bringing 78d to 80Jd. , , A total of 17,619 bales was offered to a full, representative bench of buyers. Bidding was well spread and particularly keen. Prices were firm on the recent Invercargill sale. Continental and Bradford buyers secured the bulk of the wool, pieces and oddments being keenly sought by the former. Crossbred wool showed the greatest appreciation, being 5d to lOd per lb up on values at the last sale. Fine crossbred was 2d to 3d higher, and halfbred a similar amount. Although Merino varied, prices generally were on a par. Lambs’ wool met a ready sale, and brought highly satisfactory prices, all the better class sorts making from 60d to 68Jd. Crutchings were generally on a par with the last sale, with pieces and oddments 2d to 3d better.
