RUGBY Scott’s Last Kick At Goal Just Veered Outside Post
(New Zealand Press Association)
WELLINGTON, May 5.
“. . . And this will be Bob Scott's last place-kick in a Rugby match.” The announcer’s voice carried across the Petone Recreation Ground today as R. W. H. Scott shaped up for an attempt at goal less than a minute from the end of his final game.
The ball rose high, headed goalwards, then veered outside the left-hand upright. Any groans of disappointment were lost in prolonged cheering for Scott. Before it had died down, the referee, Mr E. W. Tindill, had whistled full time, and Scott was being carried shoulder high from the field. Near the edge of the field, the procession of players halted. Over the public address system, Mr J. N. Millard, chairman of the Wellington Rugby Union, paid tribute
to Scott. Mr Millard called for three cheers for Scott. “For he’s a jolly good fellow,” sang the crowd, and Scott, not without the suspicion of a tear in his eye, made his way to the dressing room. A crowd of between 10,000 and 12,000 paid £755 to watch the game, and all joined in the applause that marked Scott’s retirement. A bright match resulted in a win for a combined Petone-Uni-versity side over Scott’s XV by 30 points to 22. One of Scott’s great contemporaries, R. A. Jarden, had a grand day. and drew plenty of applause with his fine efforts.
