BRITISH SAILORS’ SOCIETY
“A total of £207 has been given to the British Sailors’ Society s Institute, Lyttelton, for the maintenance of the building, church and supper fund,” said Mrs G. W. C. Smithson, president of the Christchurch Ladies' Guild of the society, at the annual meeting yesterday. Mrs Smithson also drew attention to the work beirfg done by the society in arranging for entertainment of seamen when in port. ~ Mrs W. Keetley gave a talk on her trip to Southern Ireland and the Continent and also outlined the work of the British Sailors Society overseas. A vote of thanks was proposed to the speaker by Mrs Norton Francis. Officers elected were: president. Mrs G. W. C. Smithson; vicepresidents, Lady Acland, Mesdames G. Gould, J. G. L. Vernon, D. Gould, E. Millton, Miss B. Sanders and Miss Ngaio Marsh; secretary, Mrs W. Keetley; treasurer. Mrs P. J. Byrne; committee, Mesdames W. Hiatt, T. F. M. Gibson, R.j MacDougall, J. G. Collins, E. M. Malden, E. Sainsbury, C. Collins, M. Wright, P. Maling, E. Fraser, D. Anderson, Misses M. Enright, M. Reese, C. Whitcombe, and H. Mayne.
