R. Lucas, riding from the scratch mark in the Christchurch Cycling Club’s opening race of the road season, rode an excellent race to go through the field and take first place and fastest time. Lucas’s time for the 25 miles was 58min 29sec. J. Wildermoth and A. S. Mobberley (Palmerston North) were two other riders who, from the scratch mark, kept with Lucas, but over the last three miles Lucas could have ridden away from them. He was content to remain with them, and in the final sprint he had it all his own way and won from Wildermoth, with Mobberley in third place. Lucas’s time of 58min 29sec was exceedingly good considering the conditions, for on the outward run from Halswell to near Doyleston the riders had to contend with a head wind as well as fairly heavy rain.
