SUBMARINE FLEET

Soviet Threat To N.A.TiO. THE HAGUE, May 4. The American commander of N.A.T.O. naval forces in the Atlantic, Admiral Jerauld Wright, said today that the Soviet submarine fleet was a very definite threat to N.A.T.O. lines of communication.

Admiral Wright, who is on a visit to The Hague, told a press conference in reply to a question: ‘‘l think unless this menace is kept under control, it could sever our sea lines of communication. “The Soviets are building this submarine fleet to accomplish this task. My job is to prevent this happening. By being ready to resist this Soviet submarine fleet, I have to convince them that aggression will be unprofitable.” Asked whether the Atlantic Command had atomic weapons at its disposal, Admiral Wright said: “The carriers have the facilities for them, and we have the permission of the N.A.T.O. organisation to prepare plans for their use.”
