Pope Calls For Work On Slums
(Rec. 8.45 p.m.) VATICAN CITY, May 5.
The Pope demanded yesterday that the governments of Europe attack the problem of the Continent’s slums —“this persistent plague of contemporary society.” Speaking in unusually energetic terms, he said that even in the richer European countries the slum population represented 10 or even 20 per cent, of the nation. The Pope was addressing a group from a French charitable organisation devoted to sending slum children into thre open air.
