FIRES ON CAPTAIN COOK
Police Investigations Hindered (New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON, May 3. Police officers still investigating fires on the immigrant ship Captain Cook today expressed their annoyance at the insobriety of many members of the crew and their difficulty in trying to question them. Yesterday, 25 members of the crew were “logged” on the ship for drunkenness. Yesterday afternoon, a small fire broke out in one of the double cabins in the crew’s quarters, and it is thought it was caused by one of the men who were being questioned in the cabin dropping a cigarette butt on to a bunk. The police were of the opinion shortly after the fire that it had been deliberately lighted by crewmembers in an effort to “take the mickey out of us,” as one policeman said. This was because two of the crew were questioned for a number of hours yesterday at the wharf police station.
