Boi, y operates the Mount Stromlo Observatory where the main lines of research are photo-electric and photographic studies of the Southn ern Milky Way and the Star Clouds of Magellan, joint radio astronomical and optical studies of the heavens and spectrographic study of southern stars; Mount 19 Stromlo Observatory is also engaged upon research "elating to the National Time Service. The Department of Geophysics under Professor J C. Jaeger, F.A.A., carries out work in the : fields of seismology, rock magnet:o ism, the deformation of rocks k and crystals, heat flow, oceanfl ography, and petrology. g The Department of Nuclear d Physics under Professor E. W. Titterton, C.M.G., F.A.A., has three accelerating machines available for ff work—two Cockroft Walton machines of 600 KeV and 1.4 MeV respectively, and a 33 MeV electron synchrotron. The main pro- . grammes are light element studies •' and photodisintegration studies. The Department of Particle Physics under Professor M. L. Oliphant, F.R.S., is working on the construction of a 10 BeV Proton Synchrotron Accelerator. The 8 MeV Cyclotron whicji will be the i- injector of the machine is now a complete and being used for reef search work. r. The Department of Radiochemiss- try under Mr F. Scarf is working •n on problems in nuclear chemistry, the application of tracer techniques to problems in electrochemistry, and the application of ts mass spectrometric analysis to the ie determination of geologic age. 5r Other applications of the mass spectrometer are also of interest to the department, e.g., studies of liquid and gas phase chemical reactions. The Department of Theoretical j Physics under Professor K. J. Le Couteur carries out work in nuc--7R lear physics and high energy - physics. Applicants should be post-graduate students with capacity for research. Successful aplpicants will be expected to enrol for a Ph.D. degree, and to commence their studies in Canberra in September, 1957, or as soon as possible thereafter. Scholarships J? are tenable for two years and may , • be renewed for a third year. The present value of a scholar- ’ ship is £A77I per annum. Married .a scholars with, dependent children j_ may be granted an additional allowance of £A2OO per annum in respect ir of the first child and a further £ASO c- per annum for each other child.
