QUEENSLAND ELECTION
Plans of State Opposition
(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 10 p.m.) BRISBANE, May 2. The Liberal and Country Parties decided last night to force a State election in Queensland. It is expected to be held in July or August. This follows the unanimous decision of Liberals and Country Party members yesterday to seek a meeting of Parliament by June 11 to deal with the present “untenable position.” The joint decision means that if Parliament were called together a ‘‘no confidence” motion could be carried by a majority of two to one.
The official Parliamentary Labour Party yesterday elected the former Deputy-Premier (Mr John Duggan) as its leader, with Dr. F. Dittmer as Deputy-Leader. At its first meeting since the party split in Queensland, it decided also to call for an early State election.
Mr Duggan was the only one of 10 Ministers to leave the Premier, Mr Vincent Gair, when the Queensland central executive expelled the Premier from the Labour Party. Mr Duggan, who left Brisbane today on a State-wide campaign to “explain” the expulsion of Mr Gair from the party to branches, said the meeting unanimously commended his general attitude in the dispute.
