COMET LANDS AT OHAKEA
331 Hours From Britain (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NTH., May 2. A Comet jet airliner, the second of its type to visit New Zealand this year, arrived at Ohakea today, bringing Air Marshal Sir Andrew McKee, Commander-in-Chief, Royal Air Force Transport Conlmand, and Lady McKee to the Dominion for an official visit. ‘‘l promised on my last trip to bring a Comet to New Zealand, and here it is. Next time I will come in a Britannia,” said Air Marshal McKee. Air Marshal McKee is visiting New Zealand at the invitation of the Government, and will pay a courtesy call on the Chief of the Air Staff (Air Vice-Marshal C. E. Kay) to discuss transport problems.
There would not be any discussions with the R.N.Z.A.F. about the purchase of Comets, he said. They were essentially a highspeed, military transport aircraft, and would not be economical in New Zealand. The 14,610 miles from Britain had been flown in 33| hours —an average speed of 500 miles an hour, he The highest speed of 564 miles an hour was recorded on -the trip from Melbourne to Ohakea.
