FALLEN LEAVES COLLECTED
Work Of “ Vacuum Cleaner ” A thick carpet of brown, fallen leaves in Cathedral square is one of the regular signs that autumn has arrived. To back up this sign the Christchurch City Council’s motorised “vacuum cleaner” is on the job. Every year from late in April until about the end of May two men operate the cleaner through the streets lined by trees. A 15 foot pipe extends from the “vacuum cleaner” and is used to scoop up the leaves, which are passed into bags hanging from the rear of the machine.
Every day the cleaner is driven about eight miles by the operators. It has not been used beyond Linwood avenue. About l£cwt of leaves alone were collected from the Square The leaves. are taken to the rubbish tip in Pages road, and sometimes they are collected by the Parks and Reserves Department, who use them for compost.
