Lotteries Planned For Opera House
(Rec. 11 p.m.) SYDNEY, May 1. Lotteries as a principal means of financing the £3.500,000 opera house planned for Sydney were proposed to the Parliamentary Labour Party by the Premier (Mr J. J. Cahill) today. He said the lotteries would be held quarterly until construction costs were met. The first prize would be £50,000 and each ticket would cost 30s.
Mr Cahill said the proposal would obviate the need to use loan funds or divert money from
public works such as hospitals, schools, and housing. In addition to the lotteries there would be a public appeal. The State Government would give £lOO,OOO as an initial contribution, and contributions would be sought from the City Council and the Australian Broadcasting Commission.
