OTIRA GORGE BLOCKED

Washout At Candys Bend The Arthurs Pass route to the West Coast was blocked last evening by a washout at Candys bend, about three miles from the top of the pass on the Otira side. The Automobile Association (Canter, bury) was advised of the washout at 6.30 p.m. and warnings were broadcast. The ranger at Arthurs Pass (Mr R. W. Cleland) said last evening that early in the evening two cars had turned back because of the washout. The driver of one car had told him that there was room tor a car but the ground was still moving. It appeared to be a serious washout, Mr Cleland said. “It has been raining hard all day—the heaviest rain we have had for some time. There had been a very high wind all day and just before dark there was a particularly severe downpour. Mr Cleland thought that six inches of rain might have fallen. The Automobile Association will inspect the road this morning.
