Announcing this today, Navy Headquarters said the rating was Able Seaman Robert Spooner, of Clarence Park, South Australia. Another rating, Able Seaman John Ro.v Stevenson, of Baddennong, Victoria, was injured. The Navy announcement said that, the Tobruk proceeded immediately to Singapore, where Stevenson was admitted to hospital. There were no other casualties. H.M.A.S. Tobruk, with five other Royal Australian Navy ships, is taking part in South-east Asian Treaty Organisation exercises. The empty 4.5 shell passed through the Tobruk’s upper deck, and one of the mess decks—doing only minor damage to the ship’s structure.
