MONTESI TRIAL NEARS END
Final Addresses To Be Given
(N.Z. Press Association Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) VENICE, April 27. The Montesi trial was adjourned today until May 20 to allow the prosecution and defence to prepare their final addresses to the panel of three Judges. The Judges, in lour months, have heard nearly 250 witnesses; including priests, police generals, journalists, film stars, servant girls and licensed prostitutes. When the trial reopens at the end of May, the prosecution and then the defence counsels of the 12 accused are expected to take nearly a month to sum up their cases. The Judges will then retire to consider their verdict. There is no jury. Piero Piccioni, the jazz-loving son of a former Italian Foreign Minister, is being tried for the alleged manslaughter of Wilma Montesi, whose death near Rome in April, 1953, brought about Italy’s post-war political and society scandal. The Marquis Ugo Montagna, man-about-town and friend of Piccioni. and Saverio Polito, the former Rome police chief, arc on trial for complicity after the fact. Nine other persons are charged with false testimony.
