OFFICIAL REPORT
X eport issued by the Christchurch Woolbrokers’ AssociaE™,’ ‘2 '“’Junction with the New f ® al "> d Woolbuyers’ Association and the New Zealand Wool Commission, s * ys Lthe fourth and final wool sale ?£ th S Christchurch 1956-57 season was held on J&turday, when six catalogues totaling 30,440 bales were submitted.
The selection was a varied one and included fairly large consignments from the Chatham Islands and the West Coast. As these are mainly from Romney sheep, the percentage of medium to strong wools was considerably greater than at the earlier sales. The condition of the offering, though not as bright as in the previous offerings, was better than had been expected, and there were a surprising number of good, attractive lines. Some of the highcountry clips were, as usual, rather discoloured and dusty, but were up to their usual standard. The offerin £> . as a whole, was lighter in condition than usual for this late s^ e -. There was again quite a large offering of lambs’ wool and many of the lines were of good length and attractive. There was also a much greater quantity than usual of second-shear wools and the usual collection of crutchings and oddments.
There was a full bench of buyers representative of the main woolbuying interests.
The sale opened on a very firm tone and bidding, though slow at times, was very keen and general. The Continent were again to the fore for all fine fleece and pieces, while Bradford was mainly competing for the medium and coarse wools. The local mills were only interested in a few super lots. As compared with the recent Wellington sale, \all classes of medium and coarse crossbreds were fully 5 per cent, dearer. With the exception of Merinos, which were rather irregular at times but generally sold in sellers’ favour, prices were about 4d per lb better than at the Christchurch February sale. Lambs’ wool also met with a good demand and all classes of pieces and oddments met with an excellent sale. Practically a full clearance was made at auction.
