Lawn Tennis BRITISH DAVIS CUP TEAM
Selection Likely Next Week
(N.Z. Press Association^—.Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 23 Members of Britain’s Davis Cup team to meet New Zealand at Eastbourne next month are expected to be chosen during or after the British hard court tennis championships at Bournemouth next week.
Michael Davies, Billy Knight, Bobby Wilson, John Barrett, and O. Pickard will be playing at Bournemouth. Roger Becker, Britain’s first string last year, is still under suspension by his county association, Surrey, and cannot play in the championship. Becker was suspended last year for failing to appear after he had been chosen to represent Surrey in an inter-county match. He has been playing recently in Continental tournaments. Davies, Britain’s No. 1 tennis player, reached the last eight in the men’s singles in the Connaught club lawn tennis tournament at Chingford (Essex) today, by beating Brian Woolf, a 20-year-old New Zealander, 6-3, 6-2.
Davies, seeded JJo. 2 in the tournament to Jaroslav Drobny, is the holder of the New Zealand title. Woolf is a former New Zealand junior champion. In the women’s singles, Mrs H. Robson of New Zealand, beat Mrs B. Hackett (Essex) in a third round match, 6-3, 7-5.
