DRIVER DIES IN HOSPITAL

Cars Collide On Main Road (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, April 21 In a collision between two cars on the Stratford-Ohura highway, west of Toko, at about 4.30 yesterday afternoon the driver of one of the cars received injuries from which he died later. He was: Norman Frederick Lemon, aged 28, of Huinga, married, with three young children. He was casein maker and temporary factory manager at the Stratford Dairy Company’s Huinga branch. Mr Lemon died three and a half hours after his admission to the Stratford Hospital. Mrs Lemon, a passenger in the front seat of the car, and a three-year-old son were also admitted to hospital with abrasions apd shock. Both are reported to be progressing satisfactorily. It is believed Mr Lemon was partly thrown out of his car when the front door opened with the impact. The driver of the other car was Wilfred Duffell Claridge, aged 53. farmer, Ohura road, Toko, who had his wife and their young daughter as passengers in the front seat. All escaped injury.

Woman Fatally Injured

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 21. A woman died last night from injuries received when she was knocked down by a car on the Great South road, Papakura. She was Mrs Nina Maud Dailey, aged 78, of 30 East street, Papakura. Mrs Dailey was taken to Middlemore Hospital from the scene of the accident at about 8 p.m. She died at 10.42 p.m.

Man Drowned At Whakatane

(New Zealand Press Association) WHAKATANE. April 21. A man was drowned in the Whakatane river about 4.10 p.m. yesterday. He was Tom Ellis Lewis, aged 36, single, a beaterman at the Whakatane Board Mills. Mr Lewis was seen swimming towards a rock in the middle of the river and some time later was heard calling for help as he was carried away by the outgoing tide. Police organised a search and ran a fishing net across the river outlet but the body has not yet been recovered. Mr Lewis was born in Wales and as far as is known had no relatives in New Zealand.

Boy Drowned In Creek

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, April 21. A four-year-old boy was drowned in a creek near his home at Whakatiwai, Firth of Thames, on Friday afternoon. He was Royal Hoewai Williams, son of Mr and Mrs R. Williams.

HIT-AND-RUN DRIVER

Two Women Struck By Car (New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 21. Two women members of the Salvation Army were knocked down and injured when struck by a hit-and-run motorist on a pedestrian crossing at the corner of Ponsonby and Richmond roads. Auckland, this evening. They are Sister Hazel Diston, of the Salvation Army Home at 90 Richmond road, who received severe cuts to her right arm and Miss L. Stirling, of th©' same address, bruises, shock and a broken finger. Both were admitted to Middlemore Hospital. St. John Ambulance men found a car door handle embedded in Sister Diston’s clothing. It had pierced her skin but not caused serious injury.

Cars Collide On Bridge Approach

Traffic on the main South road at Ashburton was diverted along a stock route on Saturday morning until two cars, extensively damaged in a collision cn the southern approach to the Ashburton river bridge, were towed away.

Three persons who were injured were admitted to the Ashburton Public Hospital. They were Messrs E. A. Hancock. of Otahuhu, cuts and abrasions, J. H. Smillie, of Albury, cuts and abrasions, and L. J. Hoskins, Pleasant Point, lacerations and shock. Their condition yesterday afternoon was reported to be satisfactory.

FOUR HURT IN COLLISION

(New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, April 21. Three persons were admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital at 12.30 a.m. today as a result of a collision at the intersection of the Kairanga-Bunnythoroe and Milsom highways. They were: Brian Morgan Grindrod, of Sandiland street, Feilding; Glenda Cranfield, North street, Feilding; and Patrick Michael Harris, 129 Hornsey road, Melrose, Wellington. The driver of one of the vehicles, Peter Samuel Hoey, of 116 Brougham street. Wellington, was admitted to the Palmerston North Hospital, where he was treated and discharged. The nature of the injuries suffered by the three injured parties was not disclosed by the hospital. Their condition tonight was described as satisfactory.
