RECORDED MUSIC SOCIETIES
Biennial Meeting Of Federation The New Zealand Federation of Recorded Music Societies wishes to be represented on panels appointed to select conductors for the National Orchestra. At the federation’s biennial general meeting on Saturday, a recommendation was passed that the executive seek to have a representative of the federation included on panels. It was also decided that the Government should be asked to have 2YC’s programmes broadcast by a station more powerful than 2YX while Parliament is being broadcast. Another recommendation was that the executive should approach the Government to reduce sales tax on records. While opening the meeting, the Mayor of Christchurch (Mr R. M. Macfarlane. M.P.) told the federation that it was not alone in wanting a reduction in sales tax. Local bodies wanted it reduced on water pipes and passenger buses. The Government must keep an eye on the general picture, he said. “Your organisation has played a very powerful part in spreading appreciation of good music and raising cultural standards in New Zealand,” said Mr Macfarlane. “We owe a very great debt to that great inventor, Thomas Edison, who invented the gramophone.” The following executive was elected for 1957-59: patron, the Earl of Harewood; vice-patron, Mr James Robertson; president. Dr. C. A. Fleming (Wellington); vice-president, Mr J. R. Brady (Wellington); secretary-treasurer, Mr J. Warner (Lower Hutt). The next general meeting of the federation will be held in Weilington.
