NEW AWARD FOR MOTOR TRADE

Overtime Payments Increased An increase in overtime payments for workers in the engineering, coach-building, aircraft and related trades has been granted under the provisions of a new award issued by the Court of Arbitration. Under the terms of the award, which came into force on April 17, 1957, the provisions have been amended to enable payment at the rate of time and’ a half for the first three hours worked on Saturday morning. All additional hours worked will be paid for at double time. The award provides for no alteration in the minimum rates of pay. Claims by the union for increased wage rates after three months’ service for garage attendants employed in a lubritorium, and for three weeks’ annual holiday after 10 years’ service, were disallowed by the Court. Dissenting on the question of annual holidays, the workers’ representative on the Court (Mr F. C. Allerby) said that the Court would have to give greater recognition to the principle of three weeks’ annual holiday after 10 or more years’ continued service as was provided for in many awards
