“Bomber” Committed To Hospital

(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) NEW YORK, April 19. Judge Samuel Leibowitz yesterday committed George Metesky, the “mad bomber of Manhattan,” to a hospital for the criminally insane. Metesky, who allegedly planted 32 bombs around New York during the last 16 years, was unable to s*tand trial because of insanity, the Judge ruled. Doctors said this week that Metesky was also suffering from an incurable form of tuberculosis. They gave him “a few weeks’’ to live. Metesky, arrested in January at his home in Connecticut, admitted that he was responsible for planting the home-made bombs in Manhattan and Brooklyn. Some exploded and several people were injured, mostly in theatres, but none was killed.
