Film Of Floral Festival
Christchurch festivities are predominant in a public screening arranged by the Christchurch Film Society for April 29 and 30 to introduce a film taken of the festival of flowers earlier this year. The film commences with extracts from the floral procession of 1950, the Centennial year, shows floral decorations arranged for the visit of the Queen in 1954, the commencement of this year’s festival with the judging of home gardens, streets and factory gardens, and then set pieces, “wear a flower” day, and other highlights of the week up to the floral thanksgiving service in Cathedral Square. Among the supporting films, the society is reshowing “Christchurch, New Zealand’s Garden City,” the film presented to the Queen from the citizens of Christchurch; the Canterbury-South African Rugby match; and “Foothold in Antarctica,” which shows the British polar party’s struggle to establish an advance base on the Weddell Coast.
