ROAD TRAFFIC AT EASTER
Appeal For Care In Driving On past records it was certain that there would be some serious accidents over the Easter period, said Mr Jr J. B. Connor, chairman of the Christchurch Metropolitan Road Safety Committee, yesterday. “With the days closing in, and a spate of traffic approaching during the holidays, members of the committee have some reason for a strong feeling of apprehension,” he said. “People will blame the light, the car, or the weather, but the sad fact is that the great majority of accidents will almost certainly be the result of some human error —not necessarily gross carelessness or recklessness, but just some minor lack of sufficient care or attention at a critical moment. “That is what makes the task of the committee so difficult,” he continued. “Even the most conscientious motorists commit small errors of judgment, or have their attention distracted, and accidents arising from these failures can be no less serious than those arising from real recklessness.” Mr Connor said the committee hoped that motorists and other road users would have a happy time at Easter, and return safe to their homes after their excursions abroad.
