TWO RESISTANCE HEROES MEET

Knew Each Other By Voice Only (Special Correspondent N.Z.P.A.) (Rec. 8 p.m.) LONDON, April 17. Two men, who were to each other only voices echoing through the air shaft of a Gestapo gaol, met for the first time in London 14 years afterwards. They were two resistance heroes who were once in daily but unseen contact for three months—a Belgian doctor, Albert Guerisse, alias Pat O’Leary, the mostdecorated escape route-organiser of them all, *and Pierre d’ Harcourt. a well-known travel writer and one-time intelligence agent. Both were betrayed to the Gestapo. Both were sent to Fresnes Prison, Paris, in 1943. Mr Guerisse’s organisation helped 600 Allied servicemen to escape. Britain awarded him the George Cross and the D. 5.0., Belgium gave him the Croix de Guerre four times and France three.

His cell was on the first floor. Above him in another cell was d’Harcourt, sentenced to death then reprieved to solitary confinement. The air shaft connected the cells so they were able to talk

and d’Harcourt used to lower cigarettes down to Guerisse on a piece of string.
